Writing State Assessment Information “The purposes of the Georgia Student Assessment Program are to measure student achievement of the state mandated curriculum, to identify students failing to achieve mastery of content, to provide teachers with diagnostic information, and to assist school systems in identifying strengths and weaknesses in order to establish priorities in planning educational programs” . In third grade, the assessment is used as a diagnostic tool to ensure continued growth as a competent writer and give feedback to parents and teachers. These writings will be collected throughout the year until March, as the teacher completes or redelivers instruction in writing. Although the class will brainstorm ideas for each type of writing before beginning, the final writing submitted in each area will be independently written without teacher support. In fifth grade, the assessment will be provided by the State Department Of Education. The students will be given a writing prompt in one of the genres, the students will have 45 minutes to compose a draft and then 45 minutes to revise and/or edit their piece. The papers are sent to the State for scoring. Performance on the writing assessments is considered for promotion at the end of the year. For more information on the State writing assessment |
